Kids' Toys - Teaching Your Child to Share Their Toys

Teaching children the act of sharing is not easy. Their fear of not getting back a favourite toy or doll is very strong and allaying such a fear is a difficult task. However, there are several methods that have been proven to work when teaching children to share. Here is a selection of them:

Timed Play: set a timer to ring after a set period of time so that each child knows their toy will be returned to them when the timer goes off. Increase the period of time gradually.

Toys Kids

Play Dates: when other children come to visit, encourage your own children to offer the visiting child a toy to play with, allowing them to feel a certain degree of control over who has the toy as they have "chosen" to share it as opposed to being made to share it.

Explain Using Books: include some books about sharing in your child's library, showing how people share and the pleasure that is gained from it. Possibly borrow a library book to illustrate the point that lots of people share the sharing book at the library.

Play Down Material Objects: try to explain to your child that although it's nice to have material objects, that friendships, love, and caring are much more important than toys.

Practise: ask your child if you can borrow one of their special toys for a short period of time and then return it. By practising at home with you, a trusted parent, your child can gain confidence in sharing their toys with others less trusted such as class mates at school.

Reward Good Sharing: children love to please their parents, so make sure you make a fuss over your child when they do share nicely with their siblings or friends. High praise in front of a parent, guardian, grandparent or close friend can make a child realise that it is good to share more often. Alternatively, a small reward such as a sticker or star on a chart can be an effective way of teaching your child that their behaviour was really appreciated.

Put Away Really Special Toys: of course everyone has something they don't want to share and so too, will your children. Make sure that the most special of toys are put away carefully so they are not brought out to be shared with and cause unnecessary anxiety. In this way, your child can see that the act of sharing is one they choose to do, not one that is inflicted upon them.

Ultimately, children will do as you do when raising them. If you share openly, then you will find that your children will too, simply because their environment is a sharing one.
